Feelings form the basis of our actions. We are driven by emotions, and via our senses of taste, smell, hearing and sight we continuously interact with our environment. DEAF04's exhibition presents recent, mainly interactive works of art which, as open systems, seduce visitors to perform affective acts. The main issue is how open systems and global networks influence our localized behaviour.

Projects

	All is Full of Love Chris Cunningham (UK), Paul Catling (UK) The music video of All is Full of Love by Björk was directed by Chris Cunningham. In it, two robots sing a duet as they court each other while being assembled. When the robots finally meet in a blissful embrace they are still under construction. Besides the video one of the actual robots from the clip, modelled after Björk, will be on display.
	The Bar Bot Time's Up (AT) Take a seat in the bar and order a drink from Bar Bot, the fully automated robot waiter. But be aware, this waiter is not here to quench your thirst. Motivated by self-interest, Bar Bot will do anything to get some money to buy beer.
	Bitmirror Tobias Grewenig (DE) Bitmirror shows the observer in a digitized form, in abstract particles projected on a screen and combined with acoustic fragments. The system shows the contrast between a real, analogue image of a human and the sterile, abstract digital form of the computer. This contrast is played upon and brought to an extreme.
	Cartographic Command Centre (CCC) Marc Tuters (CA), Jaanis Garancs (LV) Traditionally, the mapping of territory has been a form of visual knowledge generated by the military. Nowadays, digital wireless web-cartography opens this closed practice to any individual intent on creating their own spatial network. The Mobile Cartographic Command Centre (MC3) is a forward command post, synthesing a wide spectrum of artistic locative media projects, including FRIDA V. (Luka Frelih) and Bio Mapping (Christian Nold) which through the Urban Map Hack workshop create participatory electronic maps of the city of Rotterdam.
	Devmap Workspace Unlimited (BE) Devmap is the virtual online meetingpoint of DEAF04. There are three terminals that offer festival visitors access to a immersive 3-D environment composed of web cam images, videos and live-streams, texts and animations of the festival. These media will be reshaped, altered, and remapped to create a virtual version of DEAF04, constantly shifting. DEVMAP questions the relationship between experience and information, memory and interpretation.
	'Gravicells' - Gravity and Resistance Project Seiko Mikami (JP), Sota Ichikawa (JP) "gravicells" puts the senses on edge. This installation produces a visualization and sonification of the force of gravity acting upon the visitor. Interconnected sensors continuously measure the visitor's weight, movements and speed. The resulting data are converted into physical audio-visual experience by various media systems.
	iCinema films iCinema films are films produced especially for projection on the inside of a sphere and are screened in a ten meter high Dome. Simply put on one of the headsets and let your eyes scan the film that covers all of the Dome's surface but is visible only where your gaze is directed.

	Membrane sponge (US) Suspended in mid-space are ‘Membranes', large, translucent projection screens woven out of thin metal threads. On both sides of the screens images of the visitors walking around them are projected. Their behaviour is converted into image and sound effects on the other side of the screen.
	Mobile Feelings Christa Sommerer (AT), Laurent Mignonneau (FR) Through conversations conducted by mobile phone in trains or on the streets, we are often unwillingly confronted with intimate details of other people's private lives. Mobile Feelings creates the physical intimacy with the person on the other end of the line. Through organically formed mobile phones, visitors ‘receive' bodily sensations of the other person such as their heartbeat, breathing and even body odour.
	M.U.S.H. Joachim Montessuis (FR), Eléonore Hellio (FR) M.U.S.H. is an interactive, audio-visual space where two people at different locations are connected via the Internet through image and sound. In a tangle of sounds a navigational wand is used to conduct the system into a highly excited state. While playing, the contours of the other person are revealed in flashes.
	n-Cha(n)t David Rokeby (CA) n-Cha(n)t consists of a community of seven speaking computers which exchange texts associatively. Each computer listens in on conversations of spectators with microphones and speech recognition software. This input sends it on a new trajectory of associative links. When there is too much outside input, the computers stop listening, focus on each other and fall into an emergent chant.
	Networking Booths Networking Booths present artistic projects which question common given perceptions of networks we often take for granted. onewordmovie is an online platform which organizes the flood of images on the internet into an animated film. Civilization IV is a game that maps socio-economical processes and flows, simulating activities of some of the world's top IT corporations. WIMP (Windows Interface Manipulation Program) utilizes the graphical user interface of the Windows operation system as a VJ tool, a screensaver, a graphics generator or as a piece of conceptual art. Perpetual Self Dis-Infecting Machine is a transparent computer presenting the endless attacks and counterattacks of the viruses that infect the world of computing.

	Ohrwurmbeschleuniger Roman Kirschner (AT) Ohrwurmbeschleuniger uses a microwave oven as a musical particle accelerator. Instead of food, the microwaves steam tunes that you cannot get out of your head. Select two melodies via the 'Ohrwurm'-pipet and collide them to mix a new one.
	The Peoples' Portrait Zhang Ga (CH/US) The Peoples' Portrait uses the Internet to produce a global series of portraits, thus making a connection between people of greatly varying cultural and ethnical backgrounds. In cities such as Rotterdam, New York, Brisbane or Singapore passers-by can enter special photo booths to have their picture taken, which is then instantly and simultaneously displayed on large screens in all of these cities, including the large Reuters screen on New York's Times Square.
	Run Motherfucker Run Marnix de Nijs (NL) Running on a conveyor belt with a large projection screen in front of you, you find your way through a city with seemingly empty streets and dark alleys. You yourself determine the development of the movie by unexpectedly dashing into streets. Experience a thriller-like adventure over which you only partly have control.
	Tide Luke Jerram (UK) Tide makes gravity audible. In spinning glass spheres filled with water, the tiniest change in gravity causes the water to rise or fall. The spheres are made to produce tones like ringing wine glasses: one hears the changing tides and the force field between the earth and the moon.
	UnMovie Philip Pocock (CA), Gregor Stehle (DE), Onesandzeros (DE), Axel Heide (DE) The scenario of UnMovie originates in the interaction between bots (autonomous software personalities) and visitors. The installation consists of an online chat environment and a video database with a large collection of video images found on the Internet. The bots analyse conversations of online visitors, and based on this, create the script of the 'unmovie' in real time.
	Utopia Travel David Rych (AT), Emanuel Danesch (AT) The starting point of Utopia Travel is a mobile archive of videos and interviews, transported and screened by Danesch and Rych during a tour from Egypt to Vienna in an Egyptian taxi. During DEAF04, a special vehicle will be stationed at strategic locations in Rotterdam, such as Witte de Withstraat and Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, where visitors can watch video art and documentaries from earlier itineraries of Utopia Travel.
	VSSTV Gebhard Sengmüller (AT) Normally, bubble wrap is used as packing material, but VSSTV utilizes it to print TV screens. Via shortwave a plotter-like machine receives images and then fills the bubbles with either red, green or blue ink, forming the pixels of the VSSTV screen.
