R. - Rossum's Universal Robots" by Karel Capek) Robots are usually designed to serve humans. In recent years robotics research has concentrated on robots that closely mimic essential human features. Thus Hondas humanoid robot P3 is capable of independently climbing a staircase, although 20 technicians are needed to keep it balanced. The Bar Bot, a fully automated robot waiter in the DEAF04 exhibition bar, raises the question of what exactly makes a robot human. At first sight Bar Bot looks like a normal robot there to serve bar guests, but its true nature quickly becomes apparent. The Bar Bot can recognize bar guests with its special video camera eye. As soon as you stand in front of it, it asks you for money and holds out its hand. Then it calculates how much change it has received. If this is enough for a beer, it goes to the bar and orders one. The Bar Bot thus possesses a number of traits that are characteristic of people, such as social interaction, facial recognition and intelligence. It functions in the limited environment of the bar as an autonomous being; all that it lacks is a will of its own. But what would happen if the Bar Bot stopped serving humans and started serving itself? The Bar Bot was designed to put this thought experiment into practice. Whereas robots always serve others, humans usually act out of self-interest, or in the interest of the social group to which they belong. The Bar Bot is equally egotistical. Driven by self-interest, it will do anything it can to get money for beer. Its goal, however, is not to quench our thirst, but get as much beer as possible inside itself. But to do this it depends on others. Open communication becomes vital, for only through social interaction can it get its hands on a beer. The Bar Bot may be the most human robot ever built. De afgelopen jaren heeft het robotica onderzoek zich vooral gericht op robots die de wezenlijke kenmerken van een mens dicht benaderen. Zo is de P3-robot van Honda zelfstandig in staat een trap op te lopen, al zijn er wel twintig technici voor nodig om zijn evenwicht te bewaken. De Bar Bot, een volautomatische robot-ober in de bar van de DEAF04 tentoonstelling, roept de vraag op wat precies een robot menselijk maakt. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het een normale robot in dienst van de gasten in de bar, maar al gauw komt Bar Bots' ware aard naar boven. Met zijn speciale videocamera-oog herkent de Bar Bot bargasten. Zodra je voor hem staat, vraagt hij je om geld en houdt zijn hand op. De robot berekent vervolgens hoeveel muntgeld hij heeft ontvangten. Is dit voldoende voor een biertje, dan bestelt hij er een aan de bar. De Bar Bot bezit dus een aantal eigenschappen, die kenmerkend zijn voor mensen, zoals sociale interactie, gezichtsvermorgen en intelligentie. Hij functioneert in de beperkte omgeving van de bar als een autonoom wezen, alleen ontbreekt nog een eigen wil. Wat zou er gebeuren als de Bar Bot niet langer de mensheid dient, maar zichzelf? De Bar Bot is ontworpen om dit gedachtenexperiment in de praktijk te brengen. Terwijl robots altijd anderen dienen, handelen mensen meestal uit eigenbelang, of in het belang van de sociale groep waar ze bij horen. De Bar Bot is net zo egoïstisch. Aangestuurd door eigenbelang, doet Bar Bot er alles aan om geld in te zamelen voor bier. Maar let op, deze ober is er niet om onze dorst te lessen. Door contact en sociale interactie met anderen, probeert hij, net als een echte klaploper in een café, vooral in zijn eigen behoefte te voorzien. Misschien is Bar Bot daarom wel de meest menselijke robot ooit gebouwd.
