Karlis Kalnins (LV)

Karlis Kalnins is a researcher and developer for internet and new media projects. He began working with community radio in 1993, and has developed resource databases and free streaming video websites for activist organizations. Since 2001 he has explored the frontiers of collaborative cartography, free GIS, and mobile location-based media tools in an open source context. He has developed a series of locative media applications, including "GPSter" and "Geograffiti", a waypoint sharing system and mobile client for geo-annotations, and recently "Where-Fi", a community Wi-Fi positioning system. To continue this research, in 2003 Karlis co-founded an international collaborative network known as the Locative Media Lab.
