Sjoera Nas (NL)


Drs. Sjoera Nas (1969) is co-director of Bits of Freedom, a Dutch not-for-profit organisation for digital rights. She is the editor-in-chief of the bi-weekly newsletter EDRI-gram, covering privacy and civil rights developments in the European information society at large. She is also member of the board of European Digital Rights, representing 17 digital rights organisations from 11 different European countries.

From 1998 to 2002 Sjoera was the press spokesperson and public affairs officer of internet provider XS4ALL. As such, she was responsible for the strong public opinions of XS4ALL on privacy, security, freedom of speech and fair access. She initiated a courtcase against a spammer, decided to defend freedom of speech in a courtcase instigated by Deutsche Bahn about the magazine 'Radikal' and played a very active role in the association of internetproviders to promote privacy-protection. Responsible for the sponsor-policy, she was one of the organisers of HelpB92 in 1999. After leaving XS4ALL as employee, she became member of the advisory board of XS4ALL.

Sjoera Nas studied modern history at the University of Amsterdam. After graduating in 1993, she joined the Rotterdam Arts Council as program organiser for new media, doing similar work for the Studium Generale lecture series at Rotterdam Erasmus University. Between 1996 and 1998 Ms Nas worked as a producer for De Balie in Amsterdam, where she organised countless events, debates and lectures relating to to Internet, media, new technology and society.
